I spent the first 20-some years of my life living just a couple hours away from Crater Lake, but never went to see it. I'd seen lots of pictures of it and just didn't see what the big deal was. But when I finally did go see it, I was amazed. Pictures do not do it justice. You absolutely have to see it in person to appreciate the beauty of the area, and when you do, you'll wonder what took you so long to get there.

Thanks Bill.

The article is based upon feedback from the sport-riders down around Helens. Yes, I'm sure they have a bit of a bias, but better safe than sorry. I myself have gotten the evil eye from the local gendarmarie even while creeping through town doing 24 in the 25 zone in 2nd gear to keep the noise down.

In fact, I've been hearing from other Seattle riders that it's not uncommon that WSP will time groups of sport-riders between Randle and Morton and write up the whole lot of them for their average speed. Not too difficult since some of those folks average about 80-90mph between those towns.

Morton PD is very much like Twisp PD and just about every other Washington small town. You need to make sure you're going 1-2 under the limit when you go through.

Thankfully, gas pricing has gotten a little more reasonable priced there when I went through yesterday. It was about the same pricing as Eatonville and Orting and only 6-7 cents more per gallon than Sumner.

The Mexican restaurant by the highway (Plaza Jalisco) is still pretty good too.

I'll see if I can get this article updated. It's been quite awhile since I wrote that and while the road hasn't changed, some nicer photos would be good.

Not sure what happened to the OP in Morton, but that's where I fuel up and have never had a problem. Just be respectful and slow down before you get into town and should have no problems.

Times certainly do change. Just a few miles past that bridge, well before you reach the Natl Park boundary, the road turns to gravel and fades to hard packed dirt. Much of the dirt part has some severe herds of potholes along the way. Great ride for a dual sport bike. Most definitely not street bike worthy.
I would recommend Hwy 7 to Elbe or the Orting/Kapowsin Highway before this route.

The motorcycle shop in Estacada is in the process of being sold. I saw the ad in Craigslist the first week of Jan '10. Will someone buy and maintain it as a motorcycle shop? Who knows. Just don't count on it being there when you are.

That's the pure truth about the wildlife. My most recent trip through there (June 2009), I came 3 feet from tagging a doe that had been laying in the grassy shoulder and spooked out onto the road.

Combine this with a run on the old Emigrant Hill road and it makes a nice day trip to escape the summer heat.

Great curves and minimal trafic make this ride awesomw. Check out the cafe/store in Mecham for a great meal. Wildlife along the route include deer, elk, wild turkeys ( we also had a bear cross the road in front of us on the Emigrant Hill climb part of the road in the spring of 2009 ).

This is am awesome ride combining nice sweepers with gorgeous scenery. I often see big horn sheep or elk up in the hills. Unfortunately it is heavily patrolled but there are a few spots where you can see far ahead and let it rip. There are a couple of tight curves at the southern end and watch out for big rocks in the road.

Idaho 21 from Boise north to Stanley 120 miles. Twisty's, turns decreasing radius turns. 3 7000ft passes.

From Stanley Idaho 75 to Sun Valley/Ketchum Resort 60 miles. Home to the rich and famous. More twists and turns then over 8700ft Gelena Summit with a lookout at 8400 ft allowing a view of the Stanley Basin for 30 miles.

Idaho 75 27 miles to Idaho 20 then 80 miles of scenic mountain plateau's and canyons to Interstate 84 and 30 miles home to Boise.

A good 8 hour day with lunch in Sun Valley. 340 Miles

A friend of mine from Rose City HOG and I from Poineer HOG took a ride from Portland up OR 30 to Longview and then WA 411 to WA 506 to WA 6 to Pe Elli. What a great ride that is (was) lots of easy corners, not much traffic and very scenic. Took us all day, 265 miles, but very worth it.

A group of us started at Scappoose, and wound along the Scappoose to Vernonia "Highway", thence onto 202 to Mist, down to Jewell, west to Astoria, then back to The Slab on 30. The leaf colors were at their peak, the road surface was fair to good, but having not ridden that track before, the variation between slow bends through farming areas and twisties through the hillsides and forest was daunting as to what to pay attention to most and when. I'll definitely run it again solo, so I can be better attentive to things...
