I rode 202 southeast out of Astoria in October, 2011. The surface of the road is bumpy with many dips and potholes from the mountain top down the 10 miles into Jewell, no doubt from the logging trucks. If not for the less than ideal road surface, the road is fun with lots of twisties into Jewell. From Jewell to Mist the road surface is pretty smooth but posted at 50 most of the way with many straights along pastures and farm houses. I took the left turn from Mist northbound on hwy 47 to Clatskanie, which was a delight. The road surface was smooth and much of the forest had been cleared of trees so sight lines were continuous through several turns. Lots of twisties kept me on the sidewalls until a few miles south of hwy 30 which goes through dense hardwood forest with blocked sight lines. Watch out for deer. The road follows a stream. I was there at 4 pm and saw four does.

I turned onto this road from highway 47 on my way northbound from Vernonia in November 2011. The logging traffic was intense. Very few breaks in double yellow for passing. Several 5 truck convoys traveling ten over the limit made it tough to pass. If you are lucky enough not to have traffic it's easy to take the sweepers over 60 coming downhill northbound towards hwy 30 (on a Harley softail custom) until the 4 mile stretch south of highway 30 where local traffic intersects from many side streets. Most of the road is posted at 45. No cops sighted from Vernonia to 30. Lots of them once you're on 30.

this road is the gateway to canada, if you have a daulsport you just drive all the way up to the falls ,then the road turn to gravel road. just in the area ,there's 3 corner rock, you can drive in to stevenson the back way, take backway to carson. all you need is a 5 gallon gas tank and some sunny days. rated double D cup

Well R. Emmett, it's all relative now isn't it. I assure it's far less busy than any similarly curvy road near Seattle or Tacoma.

What you see above an account of my experiences. And indeed, I've never ridden this road and seen more than 20 cars during a traversal of 52.

This road is also used by joggers, non moterized bikers and pedesterians. There are no sidewalks so the road is shared by all. The speed limit is 35 until you cross into forest service land and it becomes 45. Your statement that there is little in the way of traffic or enforcement is false. Lewis County Sheriff Deputies regularly issue tickets to speeders on the sections that are not in the national forest.

Come on now. It's a logging road. There are no services and there is no upkeep on it in winter. Trees and rocks fall down all year. They don't know there is a problem until the first person finds it.

Went up here with the BMW (car) club in August 2011. Great drive and we really got to hammer it in the twisties. No traffic enforcement that we saw. But lots of tourist traffic (go early on a weekend or just go on a weekday).

Great web site. However, your above map of the route is not correct. From point "A" above follow the pioneer highway west. The route highlighted sbove is simply straight I5 boring drive.

I also just did this route from Randle to Trout Lake. Fun ride, except the section over Babyshoe Pass was 11 miles of gravel. Ok for my Honda Magna, my buddy on a VTX 1800 didn't like it so much!
If you're down there, also check out forest road 90 and 88, goes from Lewis Falls to Trout Lake, all paved except 1 very short section near Lewis falls, maybe 1/2 mile gravel.

8/2/11
Agreed James, one of the better roads of my childhood. Never was on a bike on that hill until our last trip. What a blast, like a Carny Ride.

I also did this 8/2/11 as my Spiral Highway loop. Up out Lewiston (Spiral Highway) continued onto Colton, Took that left on Wawawai Rd. (cuople miles gravel on top) Dropped down onto the Snake (there is a State Park with campsites) then back to Clarkston on what is called Down River Rd. I think that was about 80 miles round trip.
